Parents of new babies learn very quickly the things that they need to do to soothe their cranky baby. Some reach for the pacifier, some grab the baby’s favorite blanket, some walk them outside for fresh air. Not us, though. Nope - we’ve got it easy. All we have to do is show Austin our feet.
I know it sounds strange. Actually, I know that it IS strange. But, it’s true. For many months now, Austin has been fascinated - no, ENTHRALLED - by feet. Anyone’s feet. To appease him, we simply lift our feet in the air so that he can see them and voila, he’s instantly happier.
Hannah caught on to this technique very early on. As she tries to calm her brother, the conversation (albeit a one-sided one) goes something like this:
(in her most soothing three year old voice)
“Oh no buddy, what’s wrong? You’re okay, you’re okay. I’m right here. It’s okay, calm down, calm down.”
And when that doesn’t seem to do the job… she simply lifts her foot in the air and instantly, he’s overcome with her foot.
She then looks up at me, shrugs her shoulders and easily says, “He’s a foot man, Momma.”
Another “Hannah-ism” sums it up best. He IS a foot man.
